Using Online Resources to Plan a Birthday Party

Thanks for the article from Laura Ryan

Planning a birthday party is always fun, whether planning for a friend, spouse, parent or a child, it is easy to find ideas both offline and online. And even if you do choose to purchase locally you can use the internet to come up with all sorts of birthday party themes, recipes and other party ideas.

Getting Birthday Party Ideas

I do a lot of shopping and research online so the use of hughes satellite internet service to get online has been a huge time saver since it is so much faster than dial up. Then once I am online I start looking for ideas. Cruising party sites for invitations, theme ideas and to get prices is a good start but I also like to read articles on party planning and visit recipe sites for more ideas.

Sites such as eHow.com are a good place to search for party ideas, especially if you have a theme in mind already. For example, you may want to throw a pirate party for a child so looking on eHow can give you creative ideas for decorations, party favors, recipes and more to throw the perfect pirate party.

Finding Great Prices for Birthday Parties Online

If I am actually purchasing supplies online I look around on auction sites such as eBay for great prices, A lot of people think of eBay as a place to get used items but there are also plenty of sellers specialize in new merchandise as well. If I can’t find what I need on eBay then I check out popular party sites like Shindigz.com then do a search on Google for coupon codes to save money.

Nothing beats the internet for party planning, shopping or just doing basic research. And shopping online doesn’t just save money but also time.

Famous and Unusual Houses

mt vernonOne of the first major efforts to preserve historic houses was undertaken in 1858 with the restoration of Mt. Vernon, home of President George Washington. It was felt that the preservation of his home was vital so that future generations could see a house that played an important part in history through the events that took place there and learn about the people who lived there. A plaque was placed there and as with most home restorations the plaque was paid for by private funds.

french quarterNew Orleans is famous for it’s sightseeing especially around the French Quarter and Jackson Square and everything is well marked. A city known for it’s “visitor friendly” atmosphere has excellent street signs and building plaques help people see places and things they might not have noticed otherwise. Following the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina, New Orleans has been re-building to get back to the historical venue it once was.

A very unusual historic house is “The Narrowest House” located in Greenwich Village. There’s no address marker as it’s only 10′ wide and was built in 1873. It’s official address is 75 1/2 Bedford Street (located between #’s 75 and 77). It was the residence of several famous people including Margaret Mead and poet Edna St. Vincent Millay. Throughout it’s many renovations, it still remains at 1500 square feet with 3 floors and a basement combined. The last time the house was for sale was at a price of $2.7 million. Another famous house is the Vanderbilt Marble House that was built by William Vanderbilt and given as a birthday gift to his wife. It has 500,000 cubic feet of white marble. Seven years after the house was built, they divorced.

Justin Beiber Tops the Charts

musicWhen I was growing up, the music of the times came from The Beach Boys and the Kingston Trio. (I know: I’m giving away my age with that statement). My daughters listened to KISS, Poison and the metal bands. Now my granddaughters have “fallen in love” with Justin Beiber.

Justin is the total musical package having taught himself to play drums, piano, guitar and trumpet. At the age of 12, he came in second at a singing competition in Ontario.

After this performance was posted on YouTube, his career started to sky-rocket. Justin is scheduled for concerts this year including five in Canada  in September. Following up on his first single “One Time”,  his popularity and fan base continue to grow at a fast pace.

Turn Your Calves Into Bulls

bull 2Turn Your Calves into Bulls – Heavy Duty Leg Training

People who have been working out intensely for a long time often complain that they have one muscle group that just won’t keep up with the others. These body parts differ for everyone, but one common complaint from people serious about their physiques is calf development – or lack thereof. It seems like you can try just about any thing and every thing to make your calf muscles respond, but these lower leg muscles just don’t develop.

It’s frustrating to have all the pieces in place, except for one. If your quadriceps are large and in good shape, but you have pencil-thin calves, it can be embarrassing. Well, you can whip those calves into shape; it’s just going to take a little bit of creative work and determination. Here are a few exercises to help you get your calf muscles in shape.

Standard Toe Raises. This is the classic calf exercise. You put weights on your shoulder, like you were going to do a squat, but you simply push up and raise your heels high, getting up onto the balls of your feet. The problem that many people have is they use weights that are too light for this exercise. Try using 50% or your squat max in the calf raise and see how many repetitions you can do. If you can do more than ten, take the weight up to 60%. Keep doing this until you get to a weight that only allows you to do four to six clean repetitions. Keep blasting away at that weight range until you can get up to 10 reps, and then add more weight.

Triple-Box Jumps. This is a plyometric exercise that will leave your calf muscles screaming for mercy. Hop off of an 18 inch high box or bench into a full squat, then jump as high as you can. Don’t stop there though, for a full repetition, do three quick, explosive toe jumps, using only your calf muscles. Then climb back on the box and do it again. If you can get through this for five cycles, add two more toe jumps and start over again.

To get your calf muscles to grow, you have to try new things. Change weights used, repetitions done and exercise order every four to six weeks to keep these muscles confused and growing at a rapid pace.
